Contest focuses on financial education for Nebraska school children.
On February 29th, 2012, ACCESS finished accepting new applicants for its “Mastering Money Basics” writing contest. “This is our first year for this contest” stated Ms. Deb Young, Program Coordinator . “This year's theme was, 'If Money Doesn't Grow on Trees, Where Does Money Come From?' We felt this was an age appropriate theme, since so many of us, as parents, have stated 'Money doesn't grow on Trees,' to our young children. We just wanted the children to think about the phrase and try to answer the question to their best ability. Our contest was open to children in Nebraska, grades K through 5. It was designed to get them thinking about how money 'actually' works and where does it come from?"
“We will have three cash prize winners, with the grand prize of $1,500 being awarded to the school with the winning story. The money can be spent on anything the winning schools deems appropriate,” stated Ms. Young. “Applications have come from numerous schools in Omaha, Bellevue, Plattsmouth and Hampton Nebraska.”
In addition to entries from public and private schools, the contest was also open to Nebraska's home schooled students. "We were very pleased to receive a much larger number of home school submissions than we thought we would," said ACCESS' Director, Jim Malmberg. "It is heartening to know that the parents of these students recognize the value of financial education for their children. Overall, we were extremely pleased with the number of applications, with this being our first year. We are hoping to expand this program over the next few years, by expanding it into the Middle Schools and High Schools. The potential for this particular program is very exciting."
ACCESS is now in the process of reviewing all entries and will begin the judging process soon. Contest winners will be announced on April 15, 2012.
