GE Capital/Synchrony Bank Fined $225 Million Over Credit Card Marketing Practices PDF Print E-mail

June 19, 2014 - A joint effort between the CFPB and the Department of Justice has resulted in a fine of $225 million for GE Capital. The fine is the largest ever levied against a credit card company for deceptive marketing and discrimination.

The company was accused of using discriminatory marketing practices in its sales of credit card add-on services. Specifically, GE Capital offered a debt-cancellation service that allowed consumers to stop paying their bill if they involuntarily found themselves unemployed or under other limited circumstances. But the company didn't make the offer available in Puerto Rico or to Spanish speaking customers.

The debt cancellation services offered by the company were sold in various ways, including telemarketing. The government also accused the company's telemarketers of misleading consumers into believing that these services would not cost them anything.

The settlement announced by the government fines GE Capital $3.5 million for the telemarketing violations and an additional $169 million for discrimination. Additionally, the company has agreed to refund $56 million to more than 600,000 consumers who purchased debt cancellation products from them.

On June 2nd, GE Capital changed its name to Synchrony Bank.

62paulawilliams  - Synchrony Bank is unjust!   |From:75.89.26.xxx |2015-02-09 09:26:48
Synchrony Bank is the monopoly run organization that have taken over several of my credit card account. They have recently taken over the Amazon Store Card. Just today, I received a letter from them notifying me that my credit limit has been decreased from 600.00 to 210.00. My balance is 200.00 which leaves me with an available credit limit of 9.00. I am furious! I have been a customer just shy of 1 yr and have never been late on a payment and at times making 2 payments within a 1 month period. I belong to to a subscription through Amazon where I get my grandson's diapers and to a subscription where I get my pet food. I get these orders bi-monthly and the payment comes from my Amazon Store Card and it was great, I never had to worry about diapers and pet food. Not anymore, Synchrony Bank has seen to that. I'm just waiting to see how this will effect all of my other cards. I am upset at Amazon for handing our business over to this corrupt organization. I know it is hard for one person to make a difference and if this has happen to you, please stand up and be accounted for, this is unjust and wrong! There is no consideration as to how it will effect individual lives and they don't care about your personal credit history within the realm of an individual's account. Instead of rewarding good and current customers, they punish them! I have never had a credit card company decrease my credit limit but I have had them increase it. Synchrony Bank has angered the wrong person!
