May 11, 2017 - Phishing scams are nothing new. Over the years, phishing has become a lot more sophisticated than it used to be. Yes, you may still get a letter or two from someone in Nigeria who claims they need your help in getting money out of the country - misspellings and all. But the real phishing threats today usually look like they were sent to you by a company or person you trust. More often than not, they will contain company logos, be spell checked and may even contain accurate company contact information… just like this new coupon scam.
The scam works like this. You receive an email that appears to come from a real retailer offering a great deal on a purchase. To get the deal, you simply need to claim your coupon. And to do that, you are asked to give up your personal information. Part of the process involves getting you to provide a credit or debit card information.
If you fall for the email, you'll get a couple that looks very real but which is useless. You'll also become an identity theft victim very quickly.
NBC News has done a great story on the scam. You'll find it below.
