October 25, 2017 - The IRS is warning that there is a new phishing tax scam targeting tax preparers. The scam is a phishing attack; using email to target and trick victims into revealing private information in order to steal tax returns.
Targeted victims receive an email that appears to come from IRS e-Services Registration with the subject line "Important Update about Your e-Services Account." The body of the message goes on to say, "We are rolling out a new user agreement and all registered users must accept its revised terms to have access to e-Services and its products." It then provides a link for victims to follow.
Anyone who clicks on the link will be taken to a fake, but believable website and prompted to accept the new user agreement and enter a variety of information. Those completing the process run the potential of exposing usernames, passwords, SSNs and a variety of other information to the thieves behind the scam.
Anyone who believes they may have fallen for this scam should contact the IRS's Help Desk at 866-255-0654 for further information on the scam and details about how to protect themselves and their clients from any further damage.
