Scammers Are Targeting Veterans Benefits |

November 27, 2022 - The FTC is warning veterans and their families that scammers are actively targeting veterans. Specifically, they are offering to help veterans file for their benefits and charging fees for doing so. This trend has recently picked up because of the recent passage of the PACT act, a law which expanded veterans benefits for those who were exposed to toxic substances emanating from burn pits.
The warning states that one of the main tactics being used by scammers is to emphasize their own time in service. Anyone falling for one of these ads is like to be obligated to pay substantial fees for any increase in benefits received from the VA.
Veterans should know that the VA works with a large number of accredited individuals and organizations that will assist them with benefits applications for free. These include organizations like the VFW and the American Legion. Anyone who wants assistance with an application can contact the VA directly for a referral.
