May 4, 2015 – The Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, John Thune, has sent a letter to the White House voicing concern over a recent data breach. According to the White House, the breach was perpetuated by Russian hackers but they didn’t manage to get their hands on any classified data. But Senator Thune is concerned that the computers that were breached may have contained White House visitor logs.
In a statement released by Thune, he said, "Just like any entity that handles personally-identifiable information, the White House has a responsibility to notify Americans if the recent, or any future breach, results in a compromise."
Anyone visiting the White House must provide a wide variety of personal information prior to gaining access. While not classified, this information could be used for a variety of purposes including identity theft. Thune has made it clear that he believes that this information was released in the breach.
The White House has not made any comments on Thune’s letter.
