October 25, 2013 - Earlier this week we reported on a data breach at AHMC Healthcare in California. The breach occurred when two unencrypted laptop computers were stolen from a guard gated facility. The computers contain 729,000 patient names and other personally identifiable information. Approximately 10% of the records contained social security numbers. The police have now made an arrest in the case but, unfortunately for AHMC patients, the computers were nowhere to be found.
A homeless man named Christopher Lee Brown has been arrested for the theft by Alhambra Police. Brown was caught on and identified from video surveillance from the facility where the theft occurred.
According to radio news reports in the Los Angeles area, Brown had once dated an AHMC employee and was known to workers at the facility. That however doesn't explain how he was able to enter a facility that was guarded, gated and electronically monitored while it was closed.
The following is a video report on Brown's arrest.
