Presidential Candidate Julian Castro Tells Identity Theft Victim "Crime Happens" PDF Print E-mail

June 17, 2019 - We've published a good many articles over the years about the issues surrounding illegal immigration and identity theft. It's no secret that if you can lay your hands on a real social security number, you can establish an alternate identity. You don't even need the real SSN holders name in order to do it. It's called synthetic identity theft and with millions of people in the country illegally, it's a problem that is only getting worse. You might think that regardless of where you come down on immigration issues, that everyone could agree that identity theft is a bad thing. That this is an issue that needs to be addressed and that anyone caught committing it should be punished. But you'd be wrong.

If you have never heard of Julian Castro, perhaps that's a blessing. He's the former mayor of San Antonio, TX, a former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and a current candidate to become the Democrat's presidential nomination. He's also totally tone deaf when it comes to the acceptability of illegal immigrants committing identity theft.

In a town hall meeting on Fox News last Thursday, Castro was questioned by a woman who was an identity theft victim. The woman told him that her SSN had be stolen and used by an illegal alien and she wanted to know if he would back legislation to keep identity thieves of this type locked up, presumably until an immigration judge could decide their fate.

Rather than simply replying, "Yes," Castro felt the need to point out that people of all backgrounds and races commit crimes; something that wasn't at all relevant to the question asked. He then said, "Crime happens."

It should be noted that the person who committed the crime was actually arrested but a judge let him out on his own recognizance. Authorities have no idea where is he is now.

As one of the millions of Americans who has experienced identity theft themselves, I can tell you that it is not a victimless crime, as some might have you imagine. It took my wife and I years to get our credit straightened out. For those in jobs requiring a security clearance, it can lead to loss of that clearance and eventually, loss of job. It can also make it difficult to find a new job.

It is also worth pointing out that this crime never could have occurred if the United States would simply enforce its immigration laws. If that had happened, the crook wouldn't have been here in the first place.

In the last poll I looked at, Castro was polling at around 0.5%.
